One of the greatest aspects of studying in New York, and being a part of the Tisch Center, is the access we have to remarkable professionals and leaders. Recently, Professor Dave Hollander brought in Gary Vaynerchuk, one of the most well-known figures in social media, digital marketing, and more, to speak in his “Marketing of Sports & Events” class.
Gary started his career by selling wine from his parents’ local store, and is now the author of two bestselling books, Crush It! and Thank You Economy, the co-founder of a social media and brand consulting agency VaynerMedia, a business investor, a conference speaker, and an overall passionate individual with incredible stories.
Right off the bat, he stressed the importance of storytelling. The people and businesses that tell the most entertaining, relevant, and useful stories are leading the way in social media. He also mentioned that quality content is vital, and needs to be delivered to the consumer with value, usually for an “entertainment” or “usefulness” purpose.
Gary went on to discuss the various social media platforms that are most prevalent today, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Tumblr, and Pinterest. He said his agency looks at each of these channels in its own, unique way. For example, users of Pinterest and Tumblr would likely prefer different content than users on Facebook and Twitter.
Mr. Vaynerchuk’s powerful discussion was inspiring to me. The fact that one of the industry’s most well-known and experienced leaders came and spoke to our class in an intimate setting says a lot about the opportunities within the Tisch Center. As a student who is passionate and eager to learn more about marketing and emerging technologies, it was remarkable to hear Gary speak. After listening to him for just an hour, it makes me want to read his book, share his stories with others, and build off of his energy through my own activities and endeavors.
