Spring 2013 Career Services Update
March 13, 2013

The Spring semester has been busy for career services at the Tisch Center. More than 90 representatives from over 40 companies attended our Internship and Career Fair on February 26, along with 281 Tisch Center students. Thanks to our team of student leaders and volunteers who organized the Fair, employers and students enjoyed a successful event. Sports organizations in attendance included the NBA, Brooklyn Nets, and Staten Island Yankees. On-campus Hospitality interviews before and after the Fair included Starwood Hotels & Resorts, HEI Hotels & Resorts, and Hersha Hospitality Management, among others.

Opportunities abound for students to enhance their career development skills. With programs such as the Wasserman Center’s Employer Networking Night and our new Career Conversations Group for International Students, there are many resources to help prepare for a job or internship search. Stay tuned for information about upcoming workshops on LinkedIn and social media.

With summer right around the corner, many students are in the process of seeking internships in New York City, across the country, and around the world. Corinthia Hotels has recruited Tisch Center students for the second consecutive year for internships in Lisbon, Prague, Budapest and Malta. Other recent opportunities sent by the Tisch Center include the Major League Baseball Players Association, NYC & Company Sports Marketing, Denihan Hospitality, Major League Soccer, and HVS. Summer is a great time to try an internship without the pressure of balancing a full time course load.

Internships are essential for career development as they provide both hands-on training and exposure to the professional world. Internships can help students:

  • Test out different career fields/organizations
  • Gain experience for job search
  • Develop resume-building skills
  • Provide self-insight
  • Build network of industry contacts
  • Connect directly or indirectly to jobs

Tips for finding a summer internship include:

  • Read all emails sent by the Tisch Center—these messages contain multiple opportunities!
  • Search on NYU CareerNet
  • Meet with Tisch Center Career Services staff
  • Meet with your faculty mentor
  • Speak with classmates who have already completed internships
  • Network with alumni and guest speakers on campus
