Where are you interning and what is your job title?
I’m currently an Operations Intern working at BMF Media, a marketing company, but we also do a lot of event planning.
What are some of your responsibilities?
My responsibilities include managing day-by-day processes and procedures for all employees in the agency and launching and maintaining systems (including financial management, project management, expense coding etc).
What do you enjoy most about your internship so far?
I have learned a lot about finance, accounting, and Excel skills from reviewing vendor bills and expense sheets. I had many projects where I had to link an “opportunity” with a “project” and review expense sheets accordingly. I was able to practice the terms I learned from the textbook in real life. I’m currently taking event design and production class this semester, we learned a lot about opportunity, project, RFP, SOW etc. Although I understand the meaning of these terms from the definition written in the textbook, being able to use them in real life makes the learning process more practical. Moreover, I also helped to enter multiple vendor bills and expense report. From reviewing these reports, I developed a deeper understanding of the budget process of event planning.
What are your future goals?
I haven’t decided exactly what I want to do yet, but I have enjoyed my time working at BMF Media so far. I think event planning is an interesting industry. It’s a lot more complicated than what people assume because of the long process, massive workload, and vast budgeting work.
